Heading to Cuba? What to know before you go—tips and travel essentials

Visiting a tropical island famous for its culture of music, dance and lively festivals coupled with beachside relaxation, superb natural attractions and fascinating wildlife could be the holiday of your dreams! There's a lot to see, do, taste and learn in a country that's also well-known for its excellent hospitality and delicious food. So, if you're visiting soon, our list of things to know when going to Cuba will ensure your vacation runs smoothly, making it fun and memorable.

When to visit Cuba

1. Which months are the best to visit Cuba?

If you prefer airy outfits and sunshine, December to March, during the dry season, is a good time to visit. However, it's also the peak holiday season with increased crowds. To avoid them, visit between April and July—although the climate is more humid, often with afternoon showers.

2. Is it safe to visit Cuba during hurricane season?

Yes, June to November is the tropical cyclone season, with a higher likelihood in September and October. Stronger winds may interrupt your itinerary during these months, although these are generally not a safety hazard. Are you expecting some rainy days in Cuba? What to know before you go is that it's either raining or it's not! The country’s exceptional safety protocols, developed over many years of dealing with stormy weather, protect tourists and alert them to severe weather conditions, making it possible to visit Cuba year-round.

Customs and travel requirements from and to the US

3. Are entry documents needed for travel to Cuba?

Yes, all travellers must complete an electronic D'Viajeros form before arriving in Cuba. This official check-in document confirms personal, flight and passport information, as well as any restricted or high-value items you're bringing into the country. Your airline will request it before you board and Cuban immigration administrators will request the form upon arrival. Use our step-by-step guide on how to fill out the D'Viageros form. You will need to get your mandatory Cuba e-visa before you fill out the entry form.

4. How can US citizens travel to Cuba?

Americans are welcome to visit but there are certain stipulations the US government has put in place, including documents needed for travel to Cuba. Your visit to Cuba cannot be limited to tourism, so you’ll need to plan your travel so that you qualify for a general licence

All Cuban Adventures tours help qualify travellers to enter Cuba on a general licence under the Support for the Cuban People (SCP) category. Learn more about travel requirements to Cuba from the US.

5. Can non-US Citizens travel to the United States after visiting Cuba?

Yes, you can. If you're travelling to America after vacationing in Cuba, what you need to know is that you’ll need to apply for a visa. Even if your country is part of the Visa Waiver Program, which means you would usually enter with an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation), you'll need a visa if you've visited Cuba afterJanuary 2021.

Local customs and cultural tips

6. What is internet access like in Cuba?

Prepare for a digital detox because internet access is limited. To stay connected, one of the most important things to know when going to Cuba is that one of the best connection options is to purchase your local SIM or eSIM before you arrive. The costs of using your home provider for calls or data on Cuba's network can be prohibitively expensive so it's better to use Wifi or the local SIM.

7. Are there rules for bringing gifts and donations into Cuba?

Are you buying items on the island or bringing gifts to Cuba? What to know before you go is whether your gifts are considered high-value and need to be declared. Locals are happy to receive practical items like toiletries, stationery, reusable water bottles and even pre-loved clothing, as these can be scarce. Donate to those you interact with on the island rather than strangers, such as schools you visit during your tour or employees of the guesthouse where you’re staying. If in doubt, ask your tour leader or guide for advice or help distributing your donations.

8. Can I leave a tip?

Please do. The cost of living often doesn't match local salaries, so even a small tip can be helpful.

9. Are there any restrictions on taking pictures in Cuba?

Take as many photos as you like, but always ask permission before capturing anyone with your lens. Please note that taking photos of Cuban officials is strictly prohibited. When photographing locals in traditional clothing, you are required to pay a tip. Capturing or posing with them is considered a tourist activity and is also a full time job for many people.

10. Dress code in Cuba: What to know before you go

You're heading to a tropical climate, so light, breathable fabrics are ideal. The island is colourful and lively, so don't be afraid to accessorise. Cuba’s dress code is generally casual, but some restaurants, clubs and theatres require men to wear shirts with sleeves and long trousers. Women are required to cover their shoulders and knees before entering churches.

Unmissable events and festivals in Cuba

11. What are the best festivals to attend?

Attending at least one festival is a great experience when vacationing in Cuba. What to know is that there are festivals for all interests, from film and art to poetry, cigars and ballet. Cuba's biggest celebration of dance, colour and culture is the Santiago de Cuba Carnival in July. Havana also hosts an annual jazz festival every January, and there are festive season parties such as the Las Parrandas de Remedios Christmas festival and New Year’s Eve in Havana during the holiday season. Use our month-to-month event list to choose a festival or two that suits your travel plans.
