Little-known facts about Christmas in Cuba

December and January are two of the most popular months to visit Cuba, but the country’s relationship with Christmas has a fascinating history! Familiar Anglo-Saxon traditions have been banned, reinstated and transformed over the decades, and distinctly local celebrations have emerged.

Santa Claus was outlawed in 1959 for being an import, and Christmas was banned from 1969 to 1997 as the timing conflicted with the sugar harvest season. It was reinstated before the Pope’s 1998 visit. Although Christmas is celebrated in Cuba, the locals enjoy Las Parrandas de Remedios instead! Watch this spectacular festival featuring neighbourhood fireworks competitions with homemade pyrotechnics in the week before Christmas.

Our excellent leader Yuri provided us with a comprehensive record of our trip and the list of birds he helped us find. … ”
